Living Can Kill You

Online-news evolution

Although I know it’s true, I still find it hard to believe I’ve playing with this medium for ten years. Steve Yelvington, though, has been working in it for that same period (for me, it’s only eight). His look back is also a call to arms, challenging online journalism to live up to the potential we once saw in this “new media.”

One such bold experiment is the visually stunning Newsmap. Computers are great at processing data, designers can be great at presenting it as Newsmap proves. But as much as I am impressed by it, I’m not convinced Newsmap is usable enough to supplant the traditional news displays. But it does make a beautifully rich infographic.

Another Net-based technology inspired a discussion on the online-news list: the issue news sites adopting RSS feeds. Ironically, I was in favour of their adoption, despite rarely using them myself, and working for an organization that doesn’t have them in place…yet. Jack Kapica examines the topic in his latest column.
