Dot-com mania hangover
This dot-com mania hangover truly is brutal.
Another round of lay-offs hit the online content industry yesterday: Rogers is closing its iMedia division and eliminating 25 jobs (20 percent of the positions).
Cuts were made at Excite Canada, which—according to Rogers execs—will continue operating in a reduced form. (This would only be possible if its U.S. sibling can stay afloat, mind you.) In fact, the Rogers-owned Advisor.ca reported, Excite Canada is closing.
Rogers also closed its “hip” site aimed at students: Wired Rat (this link may redirect to a Quicken-like edition of MoneySense.ca soon—that’s where wiredrat.ca now points to).
Formerly independent online arms of the company’s print mags (e.g., the aforementioned Adivsor.ca and the excellent Chatelaine.com, among others) are being reined in as well. The spin is the restructuring is being done to consolidate the management. Right… More like the IPO dream finally came crashing down to Earth with the Excite@Home fiasco.
